Satoru Hoshino was a Japanese ceramic artist known for his innovative, organic approach to clay. Originally from Kyoto and a member of the influential postwar collective Sodeisha, he moved ceramics beyond traditional vessel-making into the realm of contemporary sculpture.
After a landslide destroyed his studio in 1979, Hoshino transformed his practice. Abandoning the potter’s wheel, he began shaping clay directly with his hands—pressing, squeezing, and building in what he described as a dialogue with the earth. This tactile process became his signature, resulting in powerful abstract forms that emphasize the raw vitality of the material itself.
