Hilary Brace is known for her intimate yet sublime charcoal drawings of waves, clouds, and dramatic, Baroque skies. Working reductively on darkened polyester film, she removes charcoal with erasers and handmade tools to reveal luminous compositions that feel almost otherworldly. Critics have described her technique as both sorcerous and poetic, conjuring light and space with remarkable delicacy.

Inspired by Raphael’s tapestries during a residency at the American Academy of Rome, Brace later translated her imagery into large-scale textile works in collaboration with the TextielLab at the TextielMuseum in the Netherlands. Using advanced jacquard looms, she creates light-reactive surfaces that subtly shift with the viewer’s movement and changing light.
